BOSTON (AP) — Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia ran alone for most of the Boston Marathon to win in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 17 seconds. Hellen Obiri repeated as the women's winner. She outsprinted Sharon Lokedi down Boylston Street to win by eight seconds. Switzerland’s Marcel Hug righted himself after crashing into a barrier when he took a turn too fast and still coasted to his seventh win in the men’s wheelchair race. Eden Rainbow-Cooper won the women's wheelchair race. Nearly 30,000 runners left Hopkinton for the 128th Boston Marathon. The sleepy New England town celebrated its 100th anniversary as the course's starting line.

Hilton testifies before state lawmakers Monday in support of a bipartisan bill would require short-term youth treatment facilities to report to the state government and notify parents when restraints or seclusion are used to discipline minors. The bill passed committee with bipartisan support on Monday. Hilton has become a prominent advocate for stricter oversight and regulation of teen treatment centers. She has shared publicly the physical and mental abuse she suffered as a teenager at a boarding school in Utah.

Tesla plans to lay off 10% of workforce after dismal quarterly sales, multiple news outlets report

DETROIT (AP) — After reporting dismal first-quarter sales, Tesla is planning to lay off about a tenth of its workforce as it tries to cut costs, multiple media outlets reported Monday. CEO Elon Musk detailed the plans in a memo sent to employees. The layoffs could affect about 14,000 of the 140,473 workers employed by the Austin, Texas, company at the end of last year. Musk’s memo said that as Tesla prepares for its next phase of growth, it needs to look at every aspect of the company for cost cuts and increased productivity, The New York Times and CNBC reported. News of the layoffs was first reported by electric vehicle website Electrek. Shares of Tesla fell nearly 3% in Monday morning trading after the news broke.

A 9-year-old boy's dream of a pet octopus is a sensation as thousands follow Terrance's story online

Nine-year-old Cal Clifford had always wanted a pet octopus. His dream recently came true when his father Cameron Clifford helped him adopt Terrance the octopus and set it up in a saltwater aquarium at their home in rural Oklahoma. The saga about the eight-legged mollusk quickly became popular on TikTok and eventually attracted hundreds of thousands of followers. The family was surprised to learn Terrance was a female. The cephalopod laid 50 eggs that were initially assumed to be unfertilized. They all hatched in several week. Nearly half of the hatchlings survived. Terrance is alive four months later.

Endangered Bornean orangutan born at Busch Gardens in Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — An endangered Bornean orangutan baby has been welcomed into the world at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in Florida. The female newborn was delivered by cesarean section on Saturday, weighing just over three pounds (1.3 kilograms), park officials said. The mother, Luna, is recuperating from surgery and will be reunited with the baby once she is stabilized. These orangutans are found only on the island of Borneo and are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, which focuses on managing threatened populations and educates visitors about the animals.

John Sterling retires from Yankees broadcast booth at age 85 a few weeks into 36th season

He called 5,420 regular-season games, the last against the Blue Jays on April 7, plus 211 postseason games. Sterling broadcast 5,060 consecutive games from September 1989 through July 2019 after starting with the Yankees as a pregame host.

Scheffler grabbed the lead for good with magnificent shots around the turn. And then he let Ludvig Aberg, Collin Morikawa and Max Homa make all the mistakes. Scheffler closed with a 68 for a four-shot victory. He's the fourth-youngest player to have two green jackets. And he stretches his lead at No. 1 in the world to levels not seen since the peak years of Tiger Woods. Scheffler now has three wins in his last four starts.

Iowa star Caitlin Clark makes surprise appearance on 'Saturday Night Live'

NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” during the show’s “Weekend Update” segment. The Iowa star is in New York for the WNBA draft on Monday night, where she's the likely top pick by the Indiana Fever. The NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer showed up after anchor Michael Che made a joke about Iowa retiring Clark’s jersey. Che read some more jokes that Clark said she wrote that made fun of the comedian. Clark then delivered a heartfelt message about her basketball future while thanking all the great players who came before her.
